Lligwy Beach Cafe
Excuse the romancing but it is such an incredibly spiritual place to spend time just being quiet – a rare treat in this noisy world of ours.
Diggle has a routine he likes to stick to – a long walk along the Lligwy Bay section of the Anglesey Coastal Path followed by a trip to the fantastic Lligwy Beach Cafe for a sneaky biscuit (and to allow us mere mortals a chance to enjoy a slice of cake or a tub of Red Boat Ice Cream). In true Jack Russell style, he often has a secret stash of energy to burn so we carry on our walk after refueling – we really recommend you carry on up the lane to Capel Lligwy / Hen Capel Llugwy (Lligwy Chapel).
Capel Lligwy – a chapel of ease
The oldest part of the chapel dates from the 12th century and was a chapel of ease for the widespread community of Penhros Lligwy. Capel Lligwy is attached to the Church of St Michael, which is located a little over a mile away in Brynrefail, off the coastal road towards Mynydd Bodafon (Bodafon Mountain). Mynydd Bodafon is an easy, and truly stunning, walk from one of our wonderful hideaways called Hen Tyn Y Mynydd.
The walls of Capel Lligwy would once have been white washed, which must have been a wonderful sight on bleak days. Further rebuilding in the 14th century can be seen if you look at the walls closely and see where the stones change. A final extension carried out in the 16th century shows just how integral this chapel was to the community it served.
If you look at the steps in the South Chapel you will see the entrance to the vault – below the chapel is a burial chamber that was once used by members of a prominent local family.
This Grade II listed medieval church is now under the care of Cadw along with Din Lligwy (a hut circle dating back to the Iron Age) and Lligwy Burial Chamber, all three are on this site.

Head to Moelfre and just before Moelfre itself you will arrive at a roundabout with a large anchor on it. Take the turning off signed to Lligwy. Be aware this is a narrow road so watch your passing spaces as you drive along as you may need to reverse. Just before you get to the beach there is a large layby with views of Lligwy Chapel – you can park here to explore all 3 sites Lligwy Chapel / Din Lligwy / Lligwy Burial Chamber
