A visit to Halen Môn Tide Llanw Cafe

Sitting proudly on the seashore, with stunning views of Snowdonia and Caernarfon Castle, the Tide Llanw Cafe at Halen Môn is a great place to visit. Whether it is the sole reason for your outing (we have to admit it often is for us) or it is part of a day trip combining a trip to Anglesey Sea Zoo or Foel Farm (or indeed both!) you will be more than delighted with your choice.

The promise of lunch at this incredible outdoor cafe made a long walk far more agreeable to the younger members of our group. Sam Lomas never fails to create original lunches that make you wish you had spent more time learning to cook. You cannot fail to enjoy the gentle vibe of calmness that envelops the entire site. From the artfully arranged food served from a highly original and downright funky food truck to the “I want one of those” tipis that stand proudly, allowing all-weather visits to be more than just “lunch out”, it is truly an experience everyone should add to their “must-do” holiday list. The family lives in hope.

We all spilt out of our trusty landrover, feeling the cold a little more than normal – clear skies and a drop in temperature were duly noted by all. Now don’t get us wrong we LOVE our Landy days out and wrap up warm quite happily but….arriving at a roaring log burner and food that we all took our time over and savoured was an added bonus that warmed us up immediately.

Sunday’s soup was squash and apple – served with homemade bread and Welsh cheese. This sounds so simple but my goodness it was delicious. Some of our group chose the salted beef bap and were equally quiet as they tucked in. We have to admit we panicked slightly as we filled up on this incredible food – the sight of the homemade mince pies and flapjacks caused greed to kick in. A quick addition to the walk allowed a suitable excuse to be found and the leftovers happily wrapped in napkins ready to enjoy on our walk.

Next on our list is a tour of their award winning Saltcote and Visitor Centre. The tour, which lasts around 50 minutes and includes a tutored salt tasting, is on our “to do” list come early next year. In the meantime, we popped into the gift shop and stocked up on some original presents, including a bottle of the Halen Môn distilled gin, Jin Môr. Life doesn’t get much better than this. Honestly, you can taste the salt and it really does evoke memories of coastal walks and sea breezes. Perfection in a glass, with added ice and trialled by us to help you. Honestly.

A firm favourite of ours is Anna Jones’s Squash Soup recipe, a perfect soup for these winter days. We love The Food Gatherer blog – great recipes that focus on eating seasonally and working as a local community – wonderful photography and a reason to sit still for a moment or two and absorb creativity at its best.
