Anything but a walk

It’s half term, the sun is shining, you’re trying to peel the kids away from their various screens and the notion of ‘going for a walk’ is met with unhappy grunts – sound familiar? Despite having energy to burn your little ones aren’t always rushing to lace up their walking boots and enjoy the awe of North Wales’ renowned walking trails and hikes, so how do you get them out the door without uttering the word ‘walk’? We’re big believers in working smarter not harder, so here are our top 4 ways to disguise a walk.

Hop, skip, splash – giant’s stepping stones

Bundle the family in the car and head out to hidden gem Rhuddgaer Stepping Stones. Located between the villages of Dwyran and Newborough, these giant’s stepping stones are sure to keep the little (and big) ones entertained on a nice day. Challenge each other to a race across the stones (be careful not to slip) or simply use them as a bridge to continue the Anglesey Coastal Path. If you’re looking for a spot to picnic, then this is it. If you haven’t brought your own food the Anglesey Model Village is nearby with an excellent café. If you’re staying in nearby Newborough and looking forward to a kid-free night, The Marram Grass, a Michelin Guide recommended spot, is a must-visit for foodies. This local restaurant run by two brothers serves seasonal food with a focus on championing Anglesey produce.

Play dungeons and dragons at Conwy Castle

North Wales is home to some epic castles and Conwy Castle is no exception. Swap hiking up hills for secret staircases and lofty towers and get your daily dose of fresh air by doing a full circuit of the battlements. It’s also well worth checking if there are any extra events running on the day of your visit.

  • Birds of prey experience – get up close and personal with a selection of owls, falcons and hawks and learn from their handlers all about these magnificent birds.
  • Jester days – magic, mischief and medieval mayhem are on the menu at Conwy Castle’s jester days. Expect to be whisked away by ancient stories of dragons, left in stitches by resident jester and walk away with your very own wand!

Go wild at Anglesey’s Pili Palas Nature World

A day on your feet is forgotten when it’s surrounded by furry friends! A day trip to Pili Palas Nature World is perfect for the whole family. Get hands on in Pets Corner, chase butterflies, explore the creepy crawlies in the Bug Zone or enjoy a nature trail. Burn off some energy in the epic jungle towers and hit the zipwire in the park. Ready to refuel? The Meerkat Cafe serves a wide range of food from light bites to heartier meals.

Scavenger hunts in Anglesey

Get the whole gang out the door to explore the beautiful island of Ynys Môn through an epic scavenger hunt. The team at Anglesey Treasures offer an educational adventure for families this half term. Time to get competitive! Crack the clues and find hidden gems while uncovering the history and culture of this island.
