Autumn Magic at Plas Cadnant

As the leaves turn golden and the air grows crisp, Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens transforms into a serene haven of autumnal beauty. The gardens began their revival in 1996, when the current owner set out to restore the once-forgotten 200-acre estate. Perched beside the Menai Strait near Menai Bridge on Anglesey, the gardens have since been transformed into a vibrant landscape, now considered one of North Wales’ best-kept secrets. With ties to the Tremayne family of Heligan House – famed for the Lost Gardens of Heligan – Plas Cadnant is following a similar path of rediscovery. A new garden is emerging on historic ground, earning recognition as one of Wales’ most dynamic gardens, featured in The Finest Gardens of Wales and Discovering Welsh Gardens.

The estate is home to three distinct gardens: a walled garden with curving walls and a reflective pool, a secluded valley garden with waterfalls and a river, and an upper woodland garden with stone outcrops and a 19th-century folly. Restoration began with the house, lodges, and outbuildings, all carefully revived using traditional methods.

This historic estate offers a peaceful escape into nature, history, and horticultural wonder. Whether you’re a seasoned garden lover or simply seeking a tranquil retreat, here’s how to make the most of your visit during the autumn season.

1. Embrace seasonal colours

Autumn at Plas Cadnant is a spectacle of rich hues. The woodland areas and walled gardens come alive with fiery reds, burnt oranges, and mellow yellows. Stroll through the winding paths and admire the changing foliage of ancient trees and ornamental shrubs. Don’t miss the herbaceous borders, which still hold late blooms and seed heads that add texture and interest.

2. Join a guided walk

Throughout the autumn months, Plas Cadnant offers Gardener’s Guided Walks, often including areas not accessible to the general public. These tours provide fascinating insights into the garden’s restoration journey, plant varieties, and seasonal care routines. It’s a wonderful way to deepen your appreciation of the space and learn directly from those who nurture it.

3. Discover hidden waterfalls

One of Plas Cadnant’s most enchanting features is its secluded waterfalls along the River Cadnant. In autumn, the gentle flow and surrounding mossy rocks create a magical atmosphere. The cooler weather and softer light make it an ideal time for photography or quiet reflection.

4. stay in a hidden gem

Extend your visit and enjoy your very own garden within a garden by staying at the charming onsite bolthole, Cadnant Coach House. Hidden within the historic walled garden, it offers lush green views from every room. After a day of exploring, warm up by the log-burning fire and enjoy a peaceful evening surrounded by nature.

5. Enjoy Local Produce and Welsh Hospitality

Autumn is a great time to enjoy hearty meals and warm drinks, either in your cottage or at nearby eateries in Menai Bridge. The slower pace of the season invites you to savour every moment.

6. Attend a Retreat or Special Event

Plas Cadnant occasionally hosts retreats and seasonal events. These experiences combine wellness, nature, and community in a truly restorative setting. Events run through the year, with hosts such as Zest Life Yoga Retreats, the Plas Cadnant 2026 calendar is coming soon.

7. Support Local Causes

Don’t forget to visit the Alpheus water feature, where donations support local charities. It’s a small but meaningful way to give back while enjoying the gardens.

Whether you’re seeking inspiration, relaxation, or a touch of seasonal magic, Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens is a perfect escape. Wrap up warm, bring your camera, and let the beauty of Anglesey’s best-kept secret enchant you.
