17th Century Grade II listed house on the seafront in Beaumaris
Back

Coast along to Beaumaris and immerse yourselves in the past at an enchanting seaside haven…

Porth Hir has been here for over 400 years and has seen many boats sail past! This historic space for six sits right by the beach at Beaumaris. Careful restoration work has carried Porth Hir gracefully into the 21st century and now with lamps and pieces of furniture that have been picked up on travels or come from the family – it feels homely but nicer than being at home.

Full Description

On a cold wet day, you have two sitting rooms with fires and plenty of books, or guides to plan your next adventure. The veranda cries out for company for sunnier times and the views across the Menai Strait to Eryri make long summer evenings very special.

The kitchen is extremely well equipped and great for a feast. A large range cooker can cope with anything, and the fridge can be pre-stocked with fish or home-cooked suppers. Or Deli Jones the Greedy Gardener can cook up a storm for you. The dining room is a splendid venue for culinary delights with plenty of seating for the clan and dreamy views.

Upstairs are swish bedrooms, all very traditional, comfortable and with pretty gorgeous views through sash windows. The curved bedroom door is a joy! There are no shortage of bathrooms either – three in fact – each decked out in neutral tones for a calming start to the day.

If cooking is not your thing, head into Beaumaris for oodles of choice – The Old Bulls Head or The Midland are a good start. Or try good old fish and chips and crabbing on the Pier can help you lose a day. The ice creams at the Redboat ice cream parlour are to die for.

Down the coast from Porth Hir is Penmon for more historic jaunts – visit Penmon Priory. Or head in the other direction and find Plas Newydd, a National Trust gem or Cadnant gardens – an amazing space for plant fans.

For those after a less sedate day, Rib Ride is an adrenaline adventure down the Menai Strait or Stan offers colourful boating tours on his Starida Puffin Island Cruises and sea fishing.

It’s a magical holiday cottage.

Things to do

"Friday 13th unlucky for some but ...not for us!! Had a lovely stay in your beautiful cottage, very comfortable and so lovely and clean. Will definitely recommend and will visit again. Lovely morning tea on balcony!! Fantastic."
"Admired this house over many years of coming to Beaumaris and it didn't disappoint. Some of the most comfortable beds we've had over many years. Really lovely property. Definitely hope to return. Well kept, beautifully clean and very spacious. We enjoyed cooking on the "Stoves" range, reminded us of home. Gorgeous towels and bedding, and the "goodie" bag was great. Thank you for sharing your fabulous home."
"Lovely week spent at Beaumaris, hope to be back again with the rest of our party who were unable to come last minute. Very comfortable stay, agree beds are super comfortable! However, Porth Hir not built for people over 6 foot tall - mind your heads coming and going from the kitchen! Easy distance to the town to explore the shops and cafes/restaurants. Also not too far from all the sites both on Anglesey and North Wales, familiar from past visits to Llandudno to see relatives. Lovely to walk to Fairy Glen from Betws Y Coed, walk to Red Wharf Bay and a drink at The Ship Inn, and explored the dunes and forest at Newborough. Will have to come back as so much more to explore!!"
"Ages from 6-74 years young! Porth Hir is a jewel in Beautiful Beaumaris. We absolutely loved our stay here. A wonderful home from home feel with a fabulous history too. The rooms are all decorated so stylish with quality fixtures and fittings. The beds are honestly the most comfortable we have ever slept in! We have visited Beaumaris many times, however staying here allowed us to explore the intricate back streets, admiring the pretty houses and visiting our favourite bakery and shops. We will return as soon as we can! Thank you for letting us share this beautiful home."
"I've always admired this house on our many trips to Beaumaris. As soon as I discovered it was available to stay in I booked it! Absolutely gorgeous inside & out. Such a gem. From the ancient beams & the leaded lights to the bell, all the fireplaces, plasterwork etc. Beautifully & sympathetically furnished, all compliments the house. We've had so much pleasure from being able to stay here, loved every minute. We're well used to Anglesey as we come every year. But for us this house is so wonderful & has made our holiday so special, wonderful to come back to & enjoy & immerse in history whilst sipping a glass of wine or tea, or anything actually! Would most definitely stay again, wonderful memories until then! Love it!!"
"We enjoyed & can recommend: Pier House opposite pier in Beaumaris, Redboat ice creams, Ship Inn @ Red Wharf Bay - ideal for a sunny afternoon. Sage & Dylans in Menai Bridge, The views from the Victoria in Menai Bridge looked stunning (but we didn't actually go). Dylans online booking system was a rather random, we found it better to "drop by" & book a table! We liked Plas Newydd outside Menai Bridge & some of us managed the Snowdon Mountain Railway to reach the summit in the clouds, & the whole 7 hour return trip Caernarfon - Porthmadog on The Welsh Highland Railway. Visits too to Portmeirion & Oriel Mon in Llangefni were highly appreciated!"
"We were a party of 6 adults - friends for over 50 years. We thought the place was very comfortable and well equipped - we could have baked a cake! Beware of beam in the kitchen if you're slightly above average height. Delicious Redboat ice creams, which the seagulls are very happy to take if you aren't careful!"
"Very comfortable beds, cosy lounge and perfect location. Layout fab for a Family of 6 older children, Family break, thank you! We'll back back"
"Very comfortable beds, cosy lounge and perfect location. Layout fab for a family of 6 (older children, family break) . Thank you! We'll be back."
"Gorgeous! Loved everything about this beautiful, historic house. We do hope we can come back."
"Absolutely fabulous. Cosy/warm yet very modern. The most comfortable beds we have experienced on our many stays on Anglesey. Perfectly equipped. Lovely views. Ideal location. Very much looking forward to returning. Many thanks"
