A quiet, delightfully converted barn for four, nestled in the Anglesey countryside and close to sandy beaches
Trees and wildflowers frame this delightful converted barn set in a quiet green spot on the edge of the Plas Newydd Estate. One of thirteen barns, Ysgubor Wennol (translated as Swallow Barn), once owned by the Paget family, is aptly named after some of the many feathery visitors. Red squirrels hang out here too and are known to hop into the sunny garden of this holiday house to take a peek.
Step into a serenely calm open plan living/dining and kitchen and ease yourself into a relaxing stay. There’s a wood-burner for chilly nights, a great little kitchen for cooks, and a dining space with stunning local artwork. Eat, relax, select inspiration from the wall of books and sleep peacefully up in the bedrooms under heavily pitched eaves. There’s a swish king bed dressed in crisp linens with a green view through the roof lights and a cosy twin-bedded room. Both rooms are tucked away, perfect for reading and dreaming. The super bathroom with a drenching shower is right next door.
The barn is on the outskirts of the famously named village – a bit of a tongue twister - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch or LlanfairPG for short! The Anglesey Column is an imposing sight in the village and was dedicated to Henry Paget 1st Marquess of Anglesey, hero of the Battle of Waterloo.
Plas Newydd House and Garden, a National Trust idyll is just across the road by the Menai Strait. A perfect space for taking a stroll through the landscaped gardens. The famous Anglesey Sea Zoo is a small drive away down the coast just next to Halen Môn, which produce sea salt made from the waters of the Menai Strait. Hooton’s Homegrown farm shop, where you can buy fresh local produce, is also worth a visit, allowing you to cook up a storm.
Close by, there are lots of lovely places to eat. There’s Dylan’s in Menai Bridge and The Freckled Angel to name but two. Further along the Menai Strait is Beaumaris with its eclectic independent shops and art galleries. Great destinations for lunch are The Midland and Coach at The Bull’s Head.
Ysgubor Wennol is close to the coast for beaches – just a skip away (well, a 15-minute drive) brings you to Newborough Beach with its vast expanses of sand and mountain views. Further along the coast are the villages of Aberffraw, Rhosneigr, Rhoscolyn and Trearddur Bay, all with wonderful expansive beaches.
Walking and cycling tracks exist from the barn to the coast and are great for wildlife and bird spotting. Surrounded by a protected and ancient woodland, this quiet holiday house is in an idyllic spot, with close proximity to beautiful beaches. A perfect base where you can relax and explore the beautiful island of Anglesey at your own pace.
