Boltholes & Brushstrokes: Anglesey Open Studios

Each spring, artists across Anglesey open their doors and invite visitors behind the scenes of their creative process as part of the Anglesey Arts Forum’s Open Studios. The biggest art event on the island, it draws visitors from all over the UK – and this year is shaping up to be the best yet.

At the heart of it all is the Ucheldre Centre in Holyhead, which hosts a group exhibition showcasing work from every artist taking part. It’s the perfect starting point before heading out to explore the studios scattered across the island.

This year, 59 locations are taking part, many with multiple artists displaying work – and 15 new artists joining for the first time. The event spans every kind of art form: painting, sculpture, photography, film, printmaking, installation and more. It also offers workshops for kids, making it a perfect day out for the whole family.

“The idea is to raise the profile of the artists,” says organiser Mike Gould, “many of whom do not have the resources to promote their work otherwise. Visitors also love to get an insight into the way artists work and have the opportunity to meet and ask questions.”

Huw Gareth Jones (lives next door to Cae Llyn), and Jane Samuels (owner of Seaview Cottage), are both taking part in this year’s Open Studios, each hosting their own exhibitions – well worth popping in for a chat and to see their creations.

The island’s wild seascapes, quiet corners and expansive skies inspire much of the work on show – and the way the guide is structured means visitors can plan a route that lets them experience both the art and the landscapes that shaped it.

“The land and seascape of Anglesey inspires many of the artists,” Mike adds. “Visitors can make a holiday of exploring the island and going to places they would otherwise not get to see.”

For those who prefer to explore on foot, there are also guided walks, offering a mix of studio visits and insight into the island’s wildlife and landscape.

Whether you’re a collector, a curious creative or simply want a different way to experience Anglesey – Open Studios is a unique and unmissable event.
